I am tired of this "We're updating to 2.1".... "Oh, wait.....actually we're not" BS from Verizon and Motorola. I am looking to root my droid and start running a custom rom. Was just looking for a how to guide to root and then a decent idea of what kind of roms are out there, how to install them and what kind of options they have.

Just to get an idea of what kind of features I would be looking for I am running home++ on my current unrooted setup with beautiful widgets.

    Thanks!

There is a rom section in the forum here. Android Roms - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum . Like cars and dogs, everyone has an opinion to which is best. Droidmod.com has an updater if you want a hands off automatic approach. The walk through step by step guides to doing it yourself teach you a lot about what's going on. Feel free to post any questions about what something does too.

For me, I took the path in my signature. Rooted, installed sprecovery, backed up my current setup, then went and installed smoked glass 6.0

    Good luck.

DroidMod - Everything Droid doesn't, DroidMod does.

There are really only 2 ways i would go, and one would be to go with the cyanogen mod, and run his rom, and the other would be to just root it, make a back up, and delete the stock apps i never use, running the phone as stock with root access and tinker from time to time. OCing may work itself into the program too, but for now those are my vague plans.

Rooting voids warranty right? So if my droid goes all crazy and something stops working I can't send it back to verizon to exchange it.

Yes it does "void your warranty" BUT there are ways around it. I'm not sure if you have heard of RSDlite but using this you can go back to a completely stock image and they will never have to know. I used RSD to flash the 2.1 update just to update my baseband (phone radio) and it was quite annoying but if I can do it you can too.
