Excuse me all, but what exactly does it mean when I read that a phone is "root" or "rooted"? Is there advantages to this and disadvantages?

Advantages: More flexibility, you can do so much more when you are rooted. More apps, you can get rid of all that extra Verizon stuff on your Droid.

Disadvantages: It voids your warranty.

the term is used when you have access to the root account of the OS. The root account is the admin or super user.
