I got the moto droid from a friend and i know its been hacked. I have no idea how to apply a skin. After searching on here for a while, I have gotten so confused on what to do. I was hoping for a sticky on how to apply, themes/skins but i have had no luck. I hate asking a question that has i know has been answered so many times, but I am lost and confused! Coming from a BB, this is a hole new area I am trying to learn.
    Thanks

Themes are usually broken down between roms with some themes ported to almost all of them. The first thing you need to do is flash a rom, and then go from there.

Flashing a rom . That's a new language for me. I'll try a search and see what I can learn.

    try this thread: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ha...ve-rooted-now-what-n00bs-guide-post-root.html

head into the Droid Hacking section of the forum, and you will find all sorts of info - probably more than you want. just take it slow, and do plenty of reading - you'll get the hang of it with a little searching.

in essence, a rom is a customized version of the OS for your phone. the different roms you have to choose from all have slightly (and sometimes significantly) different features, apps, etc. a theme is simply applied over the rom, and gives your phone a different look.

this is an oversimplification, but i analogize it to a house. the foundation is the android phone. the rom is like the walls, roof, rooms, etc - it defines how you are going to organize and use your house. the theme is like paint, carpet, tile, etc - it changes how it looks, but doesn't change the overall structure.

hope this helps a little. after you've done some looking around, and you still have questions, post back and we'll help you through the process. once you get going, you'll quickly start having a blast!! :)

Awesome thanks for pointing me into the right direction. The phone now has a simple pink theme. I'm just not a hot pink person. The original owner had some one do it for him so he had no clue how to change it.

First, it would be good to know what recovery process has been installed on your phone. Do you know if you have Rom Manager installed?

Sorry I did not get back to you quicker. Did you purchase the premium version?

I was trying to assess if you had Rom manager or SPRecovery.

Do you have a file manager. like Astro, installed? If not you can get it from the market or you can mount your phone and view the SD card via your computer.

I need to know if you see files named:

    nandroid
    ClockWorkrecoverymod

    recovery-99.9-3

I prefer to use SRP to install roms, themes and kernels so I'm not the best with Rom Manager but I believe that the free version will only allow you to install the Cyanogen rom. If you want to use Rom Manager to install other roms you need to purchase the premium version.

You can install SPR with Rom Manager.

What rom do you want to install?

SRP is a recovery system similar to ClockWork.

The only way I know how to remove the current theme it is to install a backup that did not contain the theme or install the same or new rom.

If you decide to install a new rom make a backup first.

Ok i think I am starting to understand the droid.

The roms is a modified OS correct? You have to use the right themes with the modified rom correct?

Its nothing like the blackberry when you just download the OTA and apply a theme/skin. The rom gets modified no as simple as applying a theme/skin?

I played around with it some, found the rom that was being used and applied another skin for it. Is it common to lose all apps, and data like messages etc when applying a new rom.

I first made a back up of what I have, I tried the beast rom and lost all settings and apps. So i reverted back to the one i was currently using.

    1.Yes a Rom is a modified OS.
2.Certain themes only work with certain roms. True.
3.It is not as simple as applying a theme.
4.You will loose all data only if you wipe the data and cache first, but you can use a backup software like titanium backup.
    5. If you don't wipe data and cache you will still have all your apps. Though some roms require you wipe first before applying a new Rom. In that case see 4. For info on backup software.
Trying out Sprint for a month. Sent from my Evo using Tapatalk. 4G is pointless when you don't live in one of the few available network areas.

Thanks for the replies all in helping me!

So many roms out there i don't know where to begin?

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Also this is what i should do,
    Backup phone..
Use titanium to back up apps/data (just downloaded no clue on what to do) Would i choose make update.zip?
    Choose rom
    download rom to phone
Use a rom manager to load the rom
apply titanium backup for my apps and data? I notice alot of roms require to wipe data.

Well.... I'm still a NOOBIE but I'm learning that I'm a flashaholic lol. I have flashed a couple, definitely even close to as many as most the people on here! But I really like ChevyNo1 SS 4.8 which comes with a simple blue theme, which is actually really sweet. Now I am using Lithium Mod and it has a really good speed/battery life combination.

ChevyNo1 Simply Stunning 4.8 (The link is broken but post #285 has the right link)

Lithium Mod link to themes.... the ROM comes with the theme...
