If you have been one of those folks scratching your head as to why pinch-to-zoom doesn't work in Gmail, and were hoping for the feature to eventually show up, then today's news might please you. Apparently the new Gmail update that will come with Android 4.2 will include several new features, including pinch-to-zoom. Apparently, there's a whole lot more to the new mobile version of Gmail than just that, however. Here's a quick breakdown of just some of the new features:
  • Pinch-to-Zoom - users can zoom in on their emails with a simple pinch gesture.
  • Swipe-to-delete - users can delete or archive their emails with a simple swipe gesture (this feature can be turned off if you are concerned you might accidentally delete emails).
  • You can also mark emails as phishing attempts just like you can mark spam
  • Attachments have been revamped and improved
  • "The new navigation dropdown now pins a shortcut to your inbox to the top of the list."
  • "Gmail now displays the number of unread items for the current label in the top right hand corner. "
The kind folks at AndroidPolice shared this story as well as a downloadable APK file for everyone to try it out. We included a download mirror below, but feel free to hit up their story at the source link below for more details and more download links. Above is a video demo of the new features.

They should include a way to permanently delete emails from the mobile browser...

I just wish there was a way to accept all images from all senders in one specific setting. I hate having to check "always allow images from this sender". Very annoying.

I'm dying for a select all button in the gmail app. The new swipe to delete is a nice feature and pinch to zoom is welcomed, but its still far from perfect imo.

I'm getting this mesage, "App not installed. An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed." I'm on a Bionic, with CyanogenMod, 20121013, unofficial-targa, JB.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

It's not an installable apk. You need to delete the current gmail apk (or rename with .bak extension) and then drop the new gmail apk into /system/app, change permissions to RW-R-R and reboot.

I'm getting a message, "Paste failure. There was not enough free disk space to complete the paste operation." I deleted the original gmail apk, but getting same message.

Your /system/app directory is filled up. You'll have to open space somehow by removing apks you don't need/use. Be careful though. Removing certain ones could break things within the ROM.

how about if I delete LatinIME.apk? It's about 23.5 mb. Would that adversely effect Swiftkey3? Or Cm wallpaper? About 7 mb.

Heh, its funny. I've never needed to zoom in on an e-mail until a couple days ago and was annoyed that you couldn't. Looks like all will be ok very soon in terms of that little thing.
