One of the first apps I would suggest is Handcent for text messaging over the stock app. I like the customization capabilities. If you are going to customize the appearance I would get Beautiful Widgets. Any of the home replacements will give you more screens for shortcuts and such. I also have downloaded a virus protection/locator for my phone. Some will say its not necessarily important but it give me piece of mind. Finally, what I told my husband when he got his droid, is before downloading any apps read the comments. I usually stay away from any that say there is a force close issue or if performance is not what I want. I am sure others here will have a ton of advice for you, but these are the few important ones for me. (oh and I am not rooted either)

:welcome: to the Droid Forums. This question is asked a lot so you may not get a huge response. I recommend Screebl. I also suggest that you go to the apps thread and search around in there. There are threads where people list their apps.

Welcome to the board and your droid!

have fun with the phone, click around and don't be afraid to mess with any apps.

As far as recommendations:
Handcent for your texting
Missed call
Screebl
Live Scores (if you're a sports fan)
MyMaps editor for your Google maps (very handy)

Again, welcome to the forum and have fun with your Droid!

You have came to the right place. You will learn so much from this community; you will get more help and info here then at a vzw store. Feel free to ask and I am sure that the people here will either answer your question or will point you in the right direction.

The first couple of apps I installed were:
pandora radio
directv nfl super fan (out of season now)
dolphin browser (pinch to zoom and the ability to change it to desk top user agent to get the Full nfl.com page).

Welcome indeed. The more Droid users, the better!

Here are a couple more apps I find useful:

-For note taking: NoteEverything
-For task lists: DoIt
-For file management- Astro File Manager
-replacement mail program: K-9 Mail
-For word, excel, pdf editing: Documents to Go
