I just received my 3rd replacement Droid from Verizon. This one is perfect aesthetically. However, I'm having issues with the proximity sensor.

When in a call, the phone screen goes completely blank (as if it were up to my ear, but its not), and the only way to get it to come on while in a call is to slide out the keyboard.

I'm wondering if this could be an error in the installed phone.apk (which is stock), or if it is indeed a hardware issue with the proximity sensor.

If it could be a problem in the installed phone.apk, how could I go about reinstalling the phone.apk? Or, would installing a new ROM, like DroidMod or Bugless Beast fix the problem (I'm not sure if they overwrite the current phone.apk, or leave it unchanged). I'm also wondering if installing the OTA 2.1 on the phone would fix it. It's running 2.0.1 now, and I'd rather not update OTA because I want to root, overclock, and use a custom ROM.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I'm having some issues from time to time with ultimate droid v9.0.0 and I've had it with unroot and this 2.1 based rom, too, but not everytime so I'm basically just saying it still happens with a new rom and am looking for a solution, as well.

hmmmm... you could try downloading root explorer and mounting as r/w i believe and just replace the current one with a different one.

You are going to have to be rooted to do anything with the phone.apk I highly doubt the problem is with the program though.

i think instead of trying to fix it yourself just take it into verizon and use it as an excuse to get a brand new phone :)

I've been dealing with Verizon. This is my 3rd referbished Droid. They won't give me a new one, they keep giving Certified Like New Replacements, which I've ALWAYS had problems with (not just with the Droid).

Guess I'll be making the trip to the Verizon store this afternoon with this one...
