I use my smartphone for my home internet. But now I need a new phone.

What is a good phone from 2014 that I can easily set up as my home wifi hotspot?

The note 4 should be able to use foxfi...or are you referring to the entitlement hack??

Not sure I know what you mean by "entitlement hack."
With my current phone (from 2011), I am rooted and can use the wifi hotspot without paying verizon the monthly hotspot fee.

That's the entitlement hack. It overrides VZW check.

Ah, okay. Then, yes, looking for a great phone, pref. from 2014ish (since they'll be alittle cheaper) that can utilize the Entitlement Hack.

    Any good suggestions?

Moto X Developer Edition. Or any other phone that you can root.

Was hoping that by now there were phones that didn't need to be rooted for this. Okay, I'll start researching that age phones that have been rooted.

Any good rootable phones from 2014 - which hopefully are not terribly expensive still?

Any device that can run foxfi..most Samsung's..get the paid version and you can run wifi hotspot without root..but this changes from update to update..the sometimes close the loophole..foxfi works to open it back up..but there's no guarantee

That would be a problem since my phone is the only internet source for my PC.

Is my understanding correct that any rooted device would work as a free hotspot?

Not necessarily. Just because it's rooted doesn't mean you can do the entitlement hack, but I can tell you that the Motorola Droid Turbo can also be quasi-rooted and you can then flash a ROM that has been pre-hacked for Wi-Fi hotspot as mine is.
