I have been following these steps:

    Root 2.1 by using SPRecovery

    1. Download ESE81update.zip
thanks to Pete of Bugless Beast for creating this file
    2. rename the downloaded file to update.zip
    3. mount Droid to computer
    4. copy file from computer to root of sdcard
    5. unmount card from computer
    6. hold X while rebooting until SPRecovery screen comes up
    7. wipe data factory reset
    8. install
    9. allow update.zip
    10. install /sdcard/update.zip (depreciated)

When I get to step 4, I copy the renamed file to the sdcard, but I am not entirely sure where to copy it to. Is there a specific file? I tried what I thought was right, but I was told the file was not found when I got to step 10.

you need to just drop it on the root of the sd card and did you just name it update because the .zip is already there it is a dumb question but lots of ppl have named it update.zip.zip

When you mount your sd card you put it in the window that pops up.
Root of hdd, sdcard, flash drive just means not in any other folders.

ok, that is where I was putting it. I was using the "Simply Stunning 3.1" file from this link

Video: Installing a Custom ROM Using SPRecovery - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

I keep getting the same message that file isn't there:(

I am going to stick with the original one in the instructions for now I guess and hopefully get this thing going!

    EDIT:

Ok I followed the instructions EXACTLY using the exact same file from the instructions and it is still telling me that the file does not exist. I even watched the video and followed it step by step. Is it possible that when I rename it that it thinks it is update.zip.zip? If I name it just update, will it recognize it as update.zip?

    EDIT2:

Turns out it was seeing it as update.zip.zip:clap:
    weird...

    thanks for the help guys!

well now I might have a couple other questions, I downloaded rom manager like in the video, and I down loaded terminal emulator, everything was fine there.

Can I tether with how I rooted this?

Just download wired or wireless tether for root users

BTW 3.1 is a bit outdated you might want to try a froyo Rom

I was hoping for wireless tethering. I downloaded wireless tether, and it says my kernel isn't correct.

is there a better one out there?

I'm reading up on froyo, seems pretty awesome, I literally JUST rooted my phone and am still learning what the hell is going on here lol.

From what I understand, I can download the file straight to my android then rename and relocate, which froyo file do I download, google seems to have an infinite amount of them.
