In the other thread you might notice that he demonstrates that the droid transmits IR. Please check it out. We are unaware of any API to access it, so it is likely a moot point. If it was there, it'd be done.

Does anybody know what that sensor on the back of the phone when the keyboard is slid out does? It sure looks like the IR sensor on the front to me and it's right behind the face sensor on the same part of the phone so I think it's an undocumented feature.

I can't find anything on it. It's obvious as heck if you slide the phone open and look at the back of it and it looks like the IR stuff on the front top of the phone.

I could have sworn I read that there was an IR TX/rx on the face for Droid to Droid communication. Maybe not, but I thought.

    app
Do you know if the Camera "hard Button" can be accessed and reprogrammed for other functions? Would make a nice Voice Call button ,etc.
there are apps that can intercept the button i saw 2 app i think that changed the buttons to suit there apps. eg Camera and volume. i would like to see an option to disable the volume buttons. i forget the name of the apps. there is also an app to change the program that is opened in the car dock and multimedia dock.

It is not the power of the OS (Symbiam) but the outdated makeup of the phone. (In my opinion of course). IR was used for "beaming" contacts back and forth... and was an important feature... somewhere in the mid to late 90's. Nowadays with Bluetooth the need for IR is diminished, and with the smaller sizes of phones, the space to dedicate to a sensor that few people used even when it was there needs to be saved for more important things or shaving more size off of the phone.

i just got done explaining this on a different thread. what youll need to get is the GRIFFIN TOTAL REMOTE. it includs the ir-1/8 phono jack, and the software youll need to make the recordings. what youll do is plug it in your computer and record the ir transmissions that your remote gives off as individual mp3 files. for example if you want the power buttons youll record you pressing the power button on your remote and when you play that file back it will act just like your remote. make a folder with all the files of IR transmissions and viola...i used this for my ipod when i made it into a universal remote and worked flawlessley

The proximity sensor is IR, but it's not going to control any home theater systems :p
edit: after reading back up the whole thread...yeah, the effective range on it is about an inch. And no method for controlling seems to have turned up either.
