Since droid has an IR rx/tx, I would like a ir remote control app to change music while I'm in my car

Doesn't it have an IR sensor for Cam AutoFocus functions, or does it use another method?

If it does have an IR sensor, there could be a ton of apps for remote control stuff! It could be a whole new range of Droid Does :)

I don't think there is an api that allows the control of the ir sensor and thus no apps can utilize it.

Do you know if the Camera "hard Button" can be accessed and reprogrammed for other functions? Would make a nice Voice Call button ,etc.

Understand. Once that can be accessed it could be used for lots of fun stuff. A simple app to assign "whatever" to that button would be handy. So far I always use the soft cam button and the hard button is a waste for now.

I like the cam button, but coming from a storm I did like being able to map all of the buttons.

This is the second thread I've seen in regards to an IR receiver.

I have yet to see anywhere in the specs a mention of such a peripheral on the DROID. As far as I understand, a proximity sensor does not an IR sensor make.

I am aware of the prox sensor on the face of the phone, that one wouldn't work well for the camera since it is on the wrong side :)

Does the Droid use another prox sensor for the autofocus, or something else? Typically cameras use IRs for autofocus. Please enlighten us if you know for sure what the autofocus uses.

In the other thread you might notice that he demonstrates that the droid transmits IR. Please check it out. We are unaware of any API to access it, so it is likely a moot point. If it was there, it'd be done.

Does anybody know what that sensor on the back of the phone when the keyboard is slid out does? It sure looks like the IR sensor on the front to me and it's right behind the face sensor on the same part of the phone so I think it's an undocumented feature.

I can't find anything on it. It's obvious as heck if you slide the phone open and look at the back of it and it looks like the IR stuff on the front top of the phone.

I could have sworn I read that there was an IR TX/rx on the face for Droid to Droid communication. Maybe not, but I thought.

there are apps that can intercept the button i saw 2 app i think that changed the buttons to suit there apps. eg Camera and volume. i would like to see an option to disable the volume buttons. i forget the name of the apps. there is also an app to change the program that is opened in the car dock and multimedia dock.

It is not the power of the OS (Symbiam) but the outdated makeup of the phone. (In my opinion of course). IR was used for "beaming" contacts back and forth... and was an important feature... somewhere in the mid to late 90's. Nowadays with Bluetooth the need for IR is diminished, and with the smaller sizes of phones, the space to dedicate to a sensor that few people used even when it was there needs to be saved for more important things or shaving more size off of the phone.
