No longer have to install the apk. You can now get it from the Market.

go into the market, then hit the menu button and go to downloads. google maps will show up with an update. update it and your good to go

Like others have said, I have the latest pinch zoom version. If it dims screens at night during navigation, it is still too bright looking from a dark road to a bright screen. My stand alone GPS screen background turns black based on TOD. That was what I was expecting/looking for.

This is exactly what the Navigation program does (background turns black based on TOD). (But only in Navigation mode -- not in regular maps mode.)
