recently i noticed this option in the nandroid and noticed it allowed me to restore just data back on to my phone's current rom. I tried this on one of my roms to restore all my apps and settings and it seemed to work just fine. but fearing that this is probably not a good way to restore your apps, i reflashed the rom and restored using titanium backup which takes alot longer. My question is: is using the advanced restore feature to restore data a good way to get back all your data on a fresh rom? i mean, are there any downsides to doing this or what? cause this seems like a godsend.

It basically makes the wipe useless imo :)

Upgrading the same ROM, ie: UD8 to UD9 or SS4.7 to SS4.8 it is ok. It restores your apps, account info, SMS/MMS, etc. I do it ALL the time. BUT, if you are changing ROMs, ie UD to LFY or SS, then you should wipe/reset 3X, flash the ROM, reboot the phone, log into your google accounts and let everything sync and automatically redownload your market apps. Then you should flash your kernel or theme. If you restore data from 1 ROM to a different ROM, you are asking for conflicts. Back up your SMS/MMS with what ever program you choose (I use My Backup PRO) and restore them if you are worried about losing your text messages.

You're wiping your data and then restoring an exact copy of it, so you might as well have not have wiped it in the first place.

Sorry to hijack a dead thread, but I am not changing roms, just wondering what option in the advanced restore options restores apps. Thank you all.

I believe it is data - but if you are interested in backing up and restoring apps - Titanium Backup is a good choice

Ti Backup will save all your data if you tell it to.
