Motorola Droid 3 Text Messaging

I can receive texts fine and can set it to notify me with a noise or vibrate but:

How do i get my text icon to show me that i have a new text message that i haven't read? All my past phones have either had a red asterik or a number on the text icon when i had unread texts waiting.

Yes u can set ur notification settings to show in ur status bar. It will appear when a new msg shows. U pull the notification bar down to view.
