I was fortunate enough to be able to pick up a Motorolla Backflip a few days ago. Thinks to the forums I have found many useful apps. However I have now gained interest in rooting. Given that the phone is less then a week old, I am doubting it can be rooted yet, or am I wrong? Assuming I can root the phone, this would allow me to upgrade from Droid 1.5 to 2.1(or is it 2.0.1) correct?

No, your phone has not been rooted yet. If it was rooted you wouldn't be able to put droid roms on it. They need to be backflip specific roms. The backflip doesn't give you the option to install non market applications so unless they decide to put an app on the market that roots for you, you will have to do it manually. As to when you will be able to root, it probably won't be long. The nexus one was rooted before it was released.

Your backflip is actually a half flip... as you can't do much with it due to att locking it down.

:welcome: to the forum. The Backflip is an android phone so I'm sure it will be discussed in this area if there are opportunities to "modify" it. Congratulations on your phone. Hope you enjoy it.

Maybe, it depends on what they took from the OS, and whether someone will be able to add it back in using pieces from other phones.

Yes technically rooting and new ROMs would eliminate the crippling. My concern would be lack of developer interest.

Could you elaborate on that more? I dont see how developers would be much of a problem. Yes it may lack developers specifically geared towards apps for the Backflip, but in the end, most Droid apps are universal, are they not? Are there actually any apps exclusive to one droid phone or another? If you mean strictly in terms of developing rooted roms for the phone, surley there will be interest by developers to help us poor AT&T folks who are locked out of the features mentioned earlier.

I'm strictly talking about ROMs/themes. I'm sure there will be a few ROMs to come out for it. But I doubt they will be maintained properly or that the phone will get anywhere near as much attention as The Droid.

Well thanks for the insight, but why would it lack development if the restrictions are broken?

    1. It's AT&T
    2. It's not a flagship phone

Developers can't spend equal time developing on each phone. They are going to pick one or two and stick with those.

I have been watching this forum for any hint of a root on the backflip. I just did a search, and this guy claims to have rooted it. Posted on his site about an hour ago. I don't have the backflip to try it, but it sounds like he's just hinting at having done it. I'll buy the backflip tomorrow if true that in can be rooted... Anyone care to try it?

Got Root on Motorola Backflip? I do. Part I.

Im not convinced yet. The pictures he showed prove nothing other then he did I hard reset. I did the same thing(minus putting a sdk or modified sdk on the SD card) just the other night. Actually, I cant even perform a hard reset this time. Maybe I just had a defective unit, but it seems odd I could do a hard reset just a day or two ago, but not now, and am effectively locked out of the phone.

Well, apparently it is true. It's now all over the internet with Mr Janky being the source of the rooting.

Still no optional bootrom's though! It should be soon
