Hi all, has anyone tried to change the animation sequence at startup? I'm personally not a fan of the blinky red droid eye/light.

All I've found so far is a 'bootanimation.zip' in system/media, with what looks like each individual frame of the animation in it, along with some other stuff...haven't tried changing anything though, im not very computer-literate and don't want bust my phone yet.

it looks like it's just a series of jpgs played in sequence. I bet it would be super simple to change this. Although, I have not tried to see if the user has write access there.

I've tried changing one frame and then re-zipping it and replacing the old one...before I try and reboot, what's the worst that could happen? Should I try it anyway?

I would imagine, just like the rest of the system folder, that you don't have access to modify in that directory.

Yep, can't modify. I hope someone can figure this out at some point, the current one is just way too long and boring.

I guess if nothing else basic Droid gifs could be made with that zip file.

While the animation may be long and boring, i'm quite sure it still takes the phone just as long to actually go through the boot sequence. I would imagine that the animation is just there as a filler.

I'm reminded of this (embedding disabled, sorry):

Key point comes around 1:45, but you should watch up to that point to get the context.

Well you have to remember, if the thing is rooted you can chmod that folder than edit it. Do you have a windows PC? You know the green bar at the beginning? The same thing is happening on the droid. Its booting up

Ok seriously... droid boot sequence doesn't exist... just joking really but going from a blackberry to a droid its probably about a 1/10th the time to boot.

Still if I could easily change it I would... to something like my picture and my phone number so if someone stole my phone they would be stuck staring at me everytime the phone booted

    HA

hopefully someone figures this one out.

Copy "/system/media/bootanimation.zip" to "/data/local/bootanimation.zip", edit and enjoy.

Maybe I need to spell it out explicitly; the phone checks for a "/data/local/bootanimation.zip" before using the default "/system/media/bootanimation.zip".

In other words the animation is easily changed, no root shell needed .. it's barely even hacking.
