So, I got my milestone a couple months ago and I've been pretty happy with it, but recently I've been looking into all this stuff about rooting and overclocking, and it seems pretty awesome. However, I'm a bit worried about bricking my phone, so I just wanted to know- is there any way to recover your phone if its bricked?

Since I've made a topic, I might as well put the rest of my questions in here as well.

Does overclocking really increase your speed by a lot?

Are there any good guides for understanding more about ROMS?

Any good ROMS available for the milestone?

Is it possible to get Android 2.3 on a rooted milestone?

Is it possible to use a tethered phone in a moving vehicle?

If the milestone is as similar to the DROID as I'm thinking then bricking it is very very very hard to do lol, welcome and best of luck! I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Don't recommend driving and browsing but yes it will work.

From what I understand the a854 milestone has a signed bootloader similar to the X and Droid2 so it is possible to brick. If its "bricked" it cannot be recovered (which is the meaning of the word in this case).

Didn't realise the boot was signed. Should still be able to recover if the sbf can be located.

I have one of those Milestone A854's and believe me, I've been looking long and hard at rooting it since I found out that it's getting ZERO upgrades from Motorola.. and the Wifi is borked with the Android 2.1 software it's running.

I don't know if, say, Peter Alphonso's GPA12 Gingerbread Droid ROM is any easier/less risky/etc to use than, say, Bugless Beast.

And lastly Balmug, I hope you've had more success with finding out information about how to root your Milestone than I have.. the information I've collected is sketchy at best and no one's been able to truly quantify what having a Milestone A854 means (versus the Milestone A853 and various Droid versions).

I thought the A854 could be rooted and rom'd.. that's the non-verizon CDMA Droid/Milestone right? And the A853 is GSM?

If you search the forum you will find that the 854 can be rooted and rom'd just like the droid. However, there probably isn't sbf files to restore to stock like the droid. Care must be taken not to change the baseband file, as this will make your phone unable to communicate on your network, making your phone an ipod:(
Do not flash an sbf file for droid or another carrier.
That being said, many others are enjoying droid roms on their milestones.
The 853 is the overseas GSM version that has a locked bootloader. Its pretty confusing, I know.

Thanks for the quick replies. I guess I won't start fiddling around with my milestone until I do some more research.

i just read a post that someone said they were using normal droid (a855) roms on the a854 since their both cdma.... i don't know how truthful this is but maybe its the same.

EDIT: i also just read that alltell wireless purchased Verizons a855's and called them the a854. so chances are its the exact same thing as a normal droid.
