Just found an interesting post over on Alldroid from Pete. He has posted a update.zip containing a cool looking music app. AllDroid - View topic - Milestone 3D Music Player!
Not wanting to mess with my wonderful shoals rom I extracted the music.apk and it seems to work great on my droid. Pardon my lack of adb, but I just renamed system/app/music.apk to music.apk.bak then copied pete's music.apk to system/app and viola we have 3d music app on shoals 1.2. I take absolutely no credit for this, in fact thanks to Pete and the other great Devs out there that feed my hobby :)

btw you must rename the attachment from .zip to .apk

Update: just caused my first random reboot with this rom....would love to here what others experience.

I'm mildly disappointed. It's a cool 3d view, but in landscape only, and this app doesn't have the 2.1 system where Artist/Album/Song/Playlist are at the top allowing for easy of switching. I think I'll go back to the 2.1 music app.

The Coverflow-knockoff is pretty much useless, but I have to say this does have the killer app for me:

If the Now Playing screen is the foreground app when the screen locks, then pressing the power button brings it up instead of the lock screen, which makes this invaluable for my unpowered car dock. (damned electrical system ground loop...)

Now all I need is BlackBerry-styled next/previous/pause mappings for the hardware buttons, and I'll be all set on the MP3-player front. Now, if only someone could figure out Matroska with embedded SUB/ASS/SRT support for the video player...

I am not rooted. Still ify on doing it, esp. since I just used insurance for a replacement. But I digress. I want the music player from the milestone but the apks' names are too similar and I cannot just install it like with the N1 2.1 Music player. Is there any way I can "rename" the apk so that it is called 3DMusic (like the N! 3D gallery)or Music2 (like the N1 Launcher/home)??? Thanks in advance!!!
Or is there away for me to "push" it w/o rooting???

adb is part of the sdk for android. Use android terminal emulator, as in the original post, to do it from your phone if you don't want to go the adb path.
