I have seen this posted with some rom threads and I've noticed some asking for it as well. Is this something I should be using when flashing roms?

The MD5 check sum is a code generated by the file so the downloader can use a program to scan and compare their download with the original uploaded file to makesure that there are no missing/incomplete downloads. It can be a real pain if you try to install a ROM that is missing a few important files.
