    I am trying to make a cable in order to charge and listen to my droid on my iPod dock. Just wondering if you guys have any advice or know if theres a better way to do this... heres my plan...

    Im going to create a cable that does 'female iPod connector --> male mini usb & 1/8" audio jack'

    [GND] Pin 16 iPod --> Pin 5 mini USB
    [5V DC] Pin 23 iPod --> Pin 1 mini USB
    [R Channel] Pin 5 iPod --> 1/8" audio R
    [L Channel] Pin 6 iPod --> 1/8" audio L

    Now the real question is do you think I could use the iPod's serial Tx and Rx pins with the 'data' pins on the mini-usb? Are they compatible? If so it would look like this...

    [Serial Tx] Pin 12 iPod --> Pin 2 mini USB
    [Serial Rx] Pin 13 iPod --> Pin 3 mini USB

    pinouts for ipod are here:
    Apple iPod and iPhone (2g, 3g) Dock Interfaces pinout and wiring @ pinouts.ru

    Thanks for any help, ill be sure to post some pictures once/if I get it made.

    EDIT*
    just noticed I called everything "mini-usb" this should be "micro-usb" in all cases

    The serial TX and RX data lines on the ipod dock connector do not map to USB data lines. USB maps to the DATA+ and DATA-

    You may be able to get it to charge and maybe play music through an ipod dock but you won't be able to skip tracks or view song info on the dock, you'll have to do all that via the phone.

    So after a bunch of testing and soldering I have decided that I will not be able to make such a cable without help.

    [IMG]
    Using a multimeter I found pins which output 5V. The dock does not seem to output anything whatsoever with the cable.

    When I use a wall charger with the cable, the droid detects the presence of USB but does not charge. I do see 5V going to the USB however. Any ideas on why this wouldn't charge? I can understand why the dock wouldn't work, I suppose it needs to have a data connection or something.

    Heres the setup which wont charge...

    120V wall -> USB wall plug charger -> USB to male iPod cable -> my connector -> 5V+ & GND connections to mini-USB -> micro USB converter -> Droid

    Heres another image for ****s & giggles...

    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    What is the current rating for the USB wall charger you are using?

    If you scroll to the bottom of this page, you can see a pretty standard charging pinout for Motorola, I would imagine that this would need something similar.

    So basically, I think the data + and - just hanging there not connected is what is preventing the charge.

    There's more to it than just the cable. The dock won't recognize the phone software. I feel this is impossible.

    Getting it to charge shouldn't be all that difficult using the USB wall charger. Getting it to charge on the clock/radio probably won't work since it probably will no be supplying enough current to that dock connector. Getting it to play music out through the clock radio speakers should also be relatively simple since he is planning on just running sound out the 3.5mm, I believe, to the dock connector...so it will basically be like plugging your Droid in the AUX port on a car stereo or something...the main issue with that will be that it is probably looking for a line level input and not an amplified input, but it should still work, I think...just might end up frying the internal amp of the clock radio maybe.

    The problem with this is how do you get it to work once its in there. I can plug a usb hard drive into my car stereo, but I tried plugging in the droid and mounting the usb and it wouldn't read it.

    Oh well, Bluetooth works just as well.
