Mail Folders on both phone and SD card.

The mail folders on ea. drive have more in them than I think they should. One has 1.5G and the other 3.75G. Can I delete the contents of these folders? If so, are there any consequences? One time I deleted both mail accounts I have and it didn't change these folders.
