Ok, first off, some of the lingo and such is greek to me so be gentle. With that said let me get you up to speed with as much useful info as I can as fast as I can.

1-bought phone new last fall and rooted it with z4root. Installed wifi tether and both worked great till yesterday.
2-had update box pop up on my screen yesterday and I clicked to ok the update and once it was finished and rebooted, the root was no longer working.
3-In case this is important info, after the update I have Android version – 2.3.3 and system version 4.5.605.MB810.verizon.en.US
4-I tried to re-install the z4root but it would not work
5-I uninstalled z4root and tried a couple other one click roots and although they say the root was successful, they are not.
6-The last root I tried was D3 easy root and after it was unsuccessful, I found the instructions below but I kept getting a "not found" message after hitting enter after the first line.

[FONT=&quot]Run a command prompt as Administrator
Change to the directory where you extracted the one click method zip file.
    type: adb shell
when you hit enter, the next line should end with a #
if it's $, make sure you are running the command prompt as admin, if you are then run the oneclick again and then start this over.
once you have the # prompt, enter the following commands pressing enter after each one:
    mount -oremount,rw /dev/block/system /system
    rm /system/bin/su
    rm /system/xbin/su
    then run the oneclick again.

7-after doing a root check I get "su binary not found or not operating correctly"
8-what are my options now to get the root working?

Which easy root did you try? I used Pete's Motorola Root Tool and it worked like a charm. I was in the same situation you were where I was rooted, accepted the OTA and then re-rooted using it. I did not even have to do the extra little trouble shoot you posted which is for the DX in that situation.

I do have one other question now that I have downloaded and installed a tether. Before my update and with the original root, the only icon that showed up was the tether icon. With the update and the new root I now have the tether icon and a hotspot icon. Is that normal with the new update and root or do you think I am being charged for the usage? Almost forgot, I have the verizon 3g hotspot stuff turned off while this is happening.

Is it the verizon hotspot or the one included with the app you installed?

It shows the tether icon that I installed as running not the verizon tether icon, but there is another icon showing up next to it that had always showed up when using the verizon tether too. I want to say at startup of my tether, it says tether or hotspot active......did I make any sense? :icon_eek:

Not too sure. You could open the other one an see what it is without turning it on I would imagine. But I should think if it isn't the VZW Hotspot then you should be fine.

I have been concerned with this also. I have been using install later till I had time to get on the forum and check what the new update entails.

My wife on the other hand, went and hit update this morning right after I had said I need to check to make sure that Z4 is still going to work and such. Now she is locked out of root and wireless tether.

I will try the Pete's rooting when I get home, hopefully that will help. Been a bit freaked that she installed and update while rooted... Some people should not be allowed to use a "Smart" phone when clearly they are the farthest thing from it...

I can say this....the update changed the look of almost everything completely and some things are in different places and it took some time to locate certain functions. I will get used to it in time but I wish I had never done the update. It also seems like my connection to towers is more jumpy also. Dont know how that would be possible but I have noticed my signal strength going from 3-4 bars to nothing in a split second and flashing back and forth, 3G does same thing but neither was doing it before the update. Maybe a coincidence but who knows.......Not real happy with all this at the moment but at least I got my tether back working.

Many many thanks to JSM9872. I ran the Petes Motorola Root Tool on a Droid X 2.3.3 / 4.5.605.MB810. Your instructions were perfect!! I then installed a new tether (wifi_tether_v3_1-beta6.apk). I am up and running with no problems.

I am glad it is working for you guys. I have linked multiple d2/d2g/dx owners to that particular tool. Have yet to come across someone who it hasn't worked for. I am sure now that I said that I will though lol.
