+1 to that but you can also (if your still running 2.01) then you can download DMupdater from the market or droidmod.org and it'll root your phone for you

just use the droid mod updater off of droidmod.org. DroidMod Updater - DroidMod
    .
it was the easiest way for me to root. just open it and it will root for you. from there i would get rom manager and rom manager premium from the market.

that's just the easiest way for me to do it.

I followed the guide but I can't get RSD Lite to recognize my droid. I have installed all drivers and still no luck. Since I can't get RSD to recognize I can't downgrade :(

DMupdater is the easiest way to do it because it does the whole process for you.
you can find it here: DroidMod Updater - DroidMod

+1 to this. I did the whole youtube video step by step way back and while not hard, it took a bit of work. I did the droidmod way for a guy at work today between customers without paying attention and I couldn't believe how easy and fast it was to root his phone and install the droidmod rom (Its his first rom, its stable and it has all the good standards)

+1000 for droidmod. It will allow for all of the 2.1 features plus it will automatically install wireless tether for you and it will even give you the option to delete factory apps that you may not even be using.

It's give me two options towards the end. Flash recovery image or quit (recommended) it says If I proceed I will void my warranty and probably break my recovery. What should I do.

Flash recovery. It's just a warning message, but it's necessary to apply SPRecovery.

Make sure you read the options carefully or else you might completely wipe your stored data.

What did you do to get downgraded? That could help out the next person who finds this thread.

I kind of want to root too but scared. But all this talk about automatically doing it for you then wow it caught some attention.
I'm on 2.1 OTA though so for the auto rooting do I have to downgrade?

Also question for all rooters, what is all the amazing ROMs that you put on your droid to make the standard "boring" droid like mine, do things it would never dream of lol.
Like I know of Over Clocking.. kind of
How fast does that make your droid go, and how fast is YOUR droid with it? Does it make browsing super fast too or no?
Also confused about the whole Adamz thing and SPrecovery thing and whatever else I'm missing. I think Smoked Glass was one too and something else. Help!
Do MOST rooters have all these stuff??

Overclocking makes moving from screen to screen go smoother. It won't speed up your web browsing. It makes the phone less sluggish, which is hard to explain as sluggish is all you know :)

The stock CPU is at 550mhz. I overclocked to 800mhz after a bunch of others had for weeks. I moved up to 1100 mhz after others had and after I had no problem at 800mhz for a while.

Read the various threads out there. Adamz created a smoked glass theme (recolored the various icons and graphics) that a lot of the roms make use of. Reading through the first link in my signature you'll see the sequence is:

    1. Root the phone
    2. install a different bootloader (sprecovery or clockwork ...depending on the rom you want to install)
    3. make a backup of your current install
    4. flash a rom to replace your current setup
    5. install setcpu or overclockwidget from the market and overclock the kernel if you want to.
Everyone that roots should have made a backup. sprecovery and clockwork let you do this. The rom section of the forum here has instructions and screenshots of the various roms put out by rom developers that frequent here.
    Most have overclocked.

Options...us dmupdater or rom manager to auto root/recover/update_rom or follow manual steps like those outlined in my signature links.

Ask which rom is the best one and if there are 10 roms out there you will get 10 different answers. Read, choose, start a thread to mark your progress, and others will assist if you need it.

Even if you choose an auto-install method, read matt's guide below to understand what's going on behind the scenes. It helps to know the lingo just in case you get stuck.
