Lights on the bottom bar

I recently got a Motorola Droid Razr. Love the android experience after switching from BB. Used BB for almost 8 years but Android Rocks. However I cannot get to turn the lights on at the bottom of the phone(Options, home, back, search) In the day time it isn't much of an issue but at night its troublesome. One of the threads mentioned that it turns on automatically due to a light sensor, but i tried placing my finger on it...still doesn't work. Is there any setting that can make it right?

Do you have your phone set to auto brightness?

No i don't. Have the brightness set to minimum....

That may be why, thought they still light up on my D2 even when I have brightness all the way off.
