Not since the earlier versions of Miui and then it usually just did it once on boot. Yes, pretty sure launcher doesn't support landscape mode since this is ported from a device that doesn't have a slide out keyboard. Most people use Launcher pro or ADW if you need landscape mode.

I don't want to sound like a bug, but are there plans to include long-press home custom applications?

If you want a feature added you need to request it from the miui developers at miui.com. metic and Zen got their work cut out for them just porting it. They don't have plans to add features. Just to make a workable port for the d1.
