Kindle - how can I make this less of a pain in the ass?

Kindle - the program I don't want and can't uninstall, is managing to continue bugging me by virtue of asking me on a daily basis to update it.

Do I have any options here other than caving in and enabling automatic update - on a program that I don't want, hate, and desperately wish I could get rid of?

I really hope this is worth it for Amazon - taking a bunch of people like me who would otherwise be completely apathetic to kindle and e-books and turning them into people who HATE KINDLE.
