I'm not really sure what I've done or how to fix it, so I am hoping someone around here can help me out.

I have a rooted Droid. I was clearing out the default apps that I don't need yesterday, and I saw "mms.apk". I assumed it was only the default messaging app. Since I have handcent, I just moved it to my SD card. That is when the problems began.

When I get a text message now, I can still see it in my status bar, and if I have popup enabled in Handcent, it will show there as well. If I open up the program, though, it shows absolutely nothing incoming. It will display my outgoing texts (which work fine), but no incoming texts, contacts, pictures, nothing.

I tried to fix it by simply reversing what I had done... I moved the app back to system/app where it was. It made no difference. The default messaging program wouldn't show up in my app menu either. So... I tried installing it. "Installation not successful".

Where do I go from here?

Did that, too. Tried first from the menu, then tried from the boot menu. Apparently it doesn't do much... the app is still missing and I still have root.

somebody really needs to make a sticky, so people know NOT to delete/rename the original (OEM) apps on the phone. you're not the first person who ran into this problem bud.

So what do I do now?

I have a second droid which has not been rooted. Is there a way to make a recovery image from that one or something?

EDIT: (hate following my own post with another post.)

I got my messaging app back now, but every time I try to open it, I get "The application Messaging (process com.android.mms) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again. "

I can't tell if that is making headway, or just false hope.

Double Edit: Got it working. There were two different mms apps in /system/app. There was "Mms.apk" (the correct one), and "mms.apk" (The incorrect one). I deleted mms.apk and the now I have text back!

Moral: For the love of god, don't delete Mms.apk!!!

Guys, if you are rooted, you should be able to push Mms back to the phone. I've not done it with Mms but I have done it with other apps after editing their images to theme them.

You just need to get your hands on the stock Mms.apk file and then use USB to move it over to the SD Card. Then use root explorer to move the file into the system/app folder. Once in there, you need to click the little button in the upper right corner to "Mount r/w". You will then need to go to the file and longpress on it. Select "permissions" Make sure for "read" all three boxes are checked. For "write" just the top box and for execute, none of the boxes are checked. Select ok and then go back to that little button in the upper right corner "Mount r/o" and tap it. Reboot the phone. Should be good to go.

EASIEST way to get the stock Mms.apk file.... whatever ROM you are using... if you don't have the ROM downloaded on your computer go do that. If you already do, open that zip folder up. Don't unzip it, just open it. Then go to system/app folder and Mms.apk will be in there. Drag it out to your desktop. You now have the stock Mms.apk file

Thank you so much for this info. Worked perfectly and I now have the stock messaging back after I deleted it thinking I could just use Handcent by itself.

I don't know what being 13 has to do with it but.. same thing man, goto your ROM or download your ROM.. then hunt around in there and pull those 2 files to your desktop. Then move them to the phone and follow my instructions from earlier in the thread.

Alternatively, just reinstall your ROM and start from scratch. You could also do an advanced nandroid backup of DATA ONLY. then wipe the phone clean and reinstall your ROM. then restore your data only backup and reboot.
