I just change the kernel to update.zip, boot into SPRecovery, Allow install of update.zip, install update.zip, then reboot. I don't wipe data or cache when I switch kernels. I go into SetCPU and typically hit menu, then device selection, then Autodectect. This will ensure the proper slots are all loaded. Good luck.
