There are a whole myriad of things you can do with a kernel. Performance enhancements are one of those things.

For example, NAND Prefetch is not in the latest .29 kernel, yet provides some performance enhancements.

Its not a black and white area, Android is just as hackable as Linux.

hmm, i will have to do some more research. i mean, i understand what a rom is doing, i guess i just don't understand what tasks the kernel handles.

i think i'm gonna try the p3 out. no harm in trying, right?

Think of the kernel as the OS brain and rest is the operating environment. The kernel is most important part of an OS.

I have tried most of the ROM's found on DF and for me Redrum Chaos runs the coolest of any hands down. I've ran them all the same as I do RRC at 1GHz.

I've been running RRC for going on 3 days (and I'm always on my Droid, just ask my wife :)) with temps ranging 69 to 98F.

My son and I just spent the last half hour playing Homerun Battle 3D and the temp maxed out at 89.6F. I notice the back of the Droid doesn't seem to get as warm to the touch as it did with other ROM's.

    :)

    Mike

    Note: YMMV

Edit: I noticed I post this in the wrong thread. But I would guess the kernal plays a major factor in how hot/cool a device will run.

ok I must be doing something all wrong tonight. DL and installed using ClockworkMod Recovery. Try OC with setCPU but still only getting 600MHz tops.

Go into setcpu settings, and autodetect.

Thanks so much for this Adrenalyne! I'm trying it out with BB V1.0. I'm not getting a CPU temp in Temp Monitor, though. Am I correct in assuming that the kernel isn't supported in Temp Monitor?
