I have rooted 2.1 now and I'm trying to get my OC and wireless tethering back. I saw adrynalyne's thread but the instructions require some methods I am unfamiliar with (and only goes down to 250MHz) and would prefer an option where I can simply apply an update.zip such as ChevyNo1 offers. That said, I was hoping somebody with some more experience using different kernels could answer a few questions for me.

    1) Does the kernel need to be made specifically for ESE81, or will any of them work fine?
    2) What is the easiest way to revert back to the stock kernel?
    3) What's the best kernel with wireless tether and an 800MHz option (would also like a 125MHz option, if anyone has a kernel with both) that will work with ESE81, in your opinion?

    Thanks in advance!

Ok. This is how I roll. Stock voltages, 5 slots (5 different speeds), and wifi tether. I can do this for you, and (probably) put it in an update.zip. Name your five slot speeds.

    Caveats:

You have to be rooted, obviously.

You can use older kernels, say from ESE53, but it is older code.

I would say 125, 250, 550(or 600), 800, and I couldn't care less about #5. Also, is there a good method for returning to the stock kernel in case something weird were to happen? Thanks for your reply.

A nandroid backup is easiest. If you are using sprecovery, you can do an advanced backup and just save boot. Thats all that would need to be restored as well.

Of course, the wifi driver must also be replaced, so its really better just to do a regular nandroid backup/restore.

I'll cook you up something decent. I'm also downloading ESE81 source code so my machine is slow, so be patient.

Thanks, I'm gonna throw sprecovery on, backup, and give this a shot. I'll report back soon.

Could it be that your update.zip has META-INF, system, and boot.img inside of a folder called update instead of being in the root directory of the update.zip file?
