well first off it depends on which recovery you are using. I use sprecovery since my droid doesn't like clockwork. Second every droid is different so you just have to find a kernel that works for you. Finally, i don't have the links handy but i know you can find chevy's kernels in his section here on DF, any other kernel can be found on google. just google, slayer kernels, or whichever kernel you are looking for. hope this helps, by the way did you get your launcher icon back?

if you are using sprecovery, then download the kernel of your choice, move it to the root of your sd card (not in any folder), rename it to update.zip (if on a computer like windows 7 or so dont add the .zip part as it adds it for you) reboot into recovery and click allow update installation, then click install update.

You would install it like you do a rom through clockwork, but don't wipe.

First download the kernel of your choice (remember the location of the file on your SD card)
Next in ROM manager go to Install ROM from SD Card
Find the File and select it.
If you want to do a backup that is fine, but Don't do a wipe
Select OK
Select OK
And it will install itself and then reboot.
That's it kernel installed, Hope this helps.
Good Luck!!
