I did not write this article. It makes a LOT of good points, and overall my Droid seems to be running a lot smoother, no random glitches anymore. The principle behind this is to not kill everything, but to selectively kill things you obviously never need/use. Read it through then make any comments you have. It came from here (formatting might look better on Reddit than here, you're choice: In light of all the discussions right now about why NOT to use a task killer, from a technical standpoint here's what that submitter got right, what they got wrong, and what you should actually be doing to maximize your phone's potential. : Android

Makes sense, but as he says, not for the casual user.

Well took the plunge and did the root tonight, used the list of all available files to rename and did so to pretty much all of them. Phone definitely feels a lot smoother, got the auto starts seems like a cool app but kind of unneeded since I renamed those apps they don't start anyway. But will hang on to it for future use, and going to use the task killer just for shutting down things after I get down with them like music or the snes emulator that don't shut down all the way. Thanks for the info.

I think it's safe to say that the majority of moderators, probably all of us, feel that task killers are totally unnecessary and probably will cause you problems further down the road. I suggest you do not use a task killer and allow Droid to manage it's own memory, it can do that just fine.

Using it in the stock sense is pointless, but following this guide was pretty good. Although I ended up disabling it since I kept having to add apps to the ignore list (was wondering why Meebo 'crashed' everytime I turned off the screen haha).

I have never used a task killer and my Droid X is super fast. Never had any problems. Not sure how it could really get much faster.

I think you guys need to consider what has been layed before us here. Just like the
analogy of android and windows with msconfig. This is only tweaking the operating system. Obviously those who won't use task killers and think their droid x runs very smooth must not know what a truly tweaked computer feels like. This really works and for those really looking for a "lagless" X, I suggest you look into this.

Pretty easy to follow once you've played with ATK for a while. This helped a lot.

Might be a silly question to some more advanced users, but out of curiousity, do you have to be rooted before Autostarts will work?

What about those of us who don't want to screw around with rooting?

What would our best options be?

I'll be getting my X next week I hope and I'll put putting Launcher Pro Plus on it right away.

After I do that...I'd love to know how to set up my X to run like a cheetah!

why not root? take about 5 whole sec. and $1 if you are not computer literate. un root is just as difficult (no $1 needed). What you can do with a rooted x is amazing (this is my First smart phone, had it less than 2 months).

the information is all here, just have to use a little common sense.

Yeah if you want it running like a cheetah going to have to go the root route. All that crapware they put on it from the factory really slows it down. I ended up taking off the ATK and have not noticed worse battey life so I will let the droid handle its own memory like it is supposed to. I just used it for closing the brower, or gallery, or music, but I don't see a difference in speed.

I still have autostarts installed but don't use it much since I renamed those other programs they don't start anyway. I am going on 1day 5hours since unplugged and only down 50% battery, so I would really recommend rooting if not for getting those programs off alone.

I don't use the free tether because I really don't have a use for it, but cool option in case I ever do. One click rooting and downloading the root explorer from the market is the way to go. Check the hacks section they have very good tutorials in there.
