I have moved some stuff off that bottom row and out stuff on it but i can't remove the apps icon either

With the stock launcher you can not remove the icon that opens the drawer. You will have to install a third party launcher for that.

Well at least I gained another spot on the dock moving from the D2G to DRM (4 to 5).
