rom manager is a program which easily allows you to download and install customs roms and kernels and such. Check it out if it interests you.

If you have a laptop and would like to use your phones internet connection for web browsing then download wifi tether in the market.

Overclocking 101 is a good resource. Set profiles in setcpu to save battery life while still maxing cpu speed.

Always have a nandroid backup of your phone in a good state.ROM manger is good at making backups.

The easiest way is with z4root- available in the market free. Also you can go here: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/re...08-multiple-phones-root-them-unroot-them.html and root using one of these processes.
