Jelly Bean 4.1 Emojis

I found out recently that on Jelly Bean 4.1 you can now send and receive emoticons. To enable the emojis you go to Settings>Language & Input> Android Keyboard>Add on dictionaries>emojis for English. I install it and still cannot type out emojis. After time it will go back to saying I need to install it again. I've looked on the internet and see people having the same problem. I can't seem to find a solution! Any suggestions? I'm tired of switching to an alternate keyboard just to type emojis.
