I, too am completely inexperienced with rooting, and would like to be able to get rid of bloatware, increase battery life, customize my user interface, and tether. I've NEVER done it on any phone, and am very hesitant to try without extremely specific step-by-step instructions. I'd be very grateful for any answer. Thanks, Barb

at this point, being inexperienced, i would suggest you take a little time to read through the stickies at the top of this forum.
included in those post are the tools and how to use them you will need to know about to flash your phone.
the gingerbread OTA will start releasing in a couple weeks and the files i can point you to now will not work after the ota and it is "possible" you wont get the ota.

im not trying to sound like i dont want to help you, i do, and if your set on rooting now i will guide you, but be aware you "may" have to flash back to stock to get the ota.
in my opinion, at this point, its best to wait a couple weeks and read up on flashing with Odin and Samsung PST.

Ok, I have no problem waiting and researching while I do! Thanks so much for your quick reply, and for your words of caution. I'm fairly technical in the realm of computers, but am a complete novice with phones....ready to get my get wet (I think)!
Thanks again, and any updated information is welcome!

In my experience release dates, especially for Samsung are iffy at best. I would do your research and root. Not to mention people have already rooted GB releases, like the one I have. All up to you though, don't go into an u comfortable rhelm.

Hey I just got the Droid charge. I came from the Droid x on liberty gb .08.

Can you pm me the link to the best current root?

Also does barnacle work on rooted charge? On Droid x they locked it down.

    Thanks so much.

Congrats on your new Charge! I used Barnacle several weeks ago without problems but I haven't tried it since I flashed GB builds.

Check out the links in my signature for some more info on rooting. You can go with Froyo or Gingerbread.

Awesome. Ok so im gonna root this thing! lol

    Thanks for your feedback. lol

Can you do a test for me for the barnacle on gb please.

I know that for droid x.... before liberty went to GB it was flawless. Then on gb.... all tethering apps broke. I spent HOURS trying to run hacks and flashes and updates and the best i could do is get it to connect briefly and then keep disconnecting. I read every forum possible... and i finally concluded that on my particular phone verizon found a way to block it off. I read somewhere that it was built into the GB kernel or something. I honestly dont know if i am saying that right... i just know it broke.

So for me.... i would LOVE to get tethering back. But i would LOVE to get on GB.... because i took a step back when i went from a GB Droid X to a Froyo Charge.... even with better specs and 4g.

Can you test it and let me know? Send me a PM and we can talk on an IM and run some tests if you want.

Anything still running 2.2 shouldnt have a problem..I believe also any custom GB build shouldnt have any issues with tethering
