in this thread they say the rom makes a built in swap partition. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...-sholes-info-edition-1-0-updated-01-12-a.html
that is great and would speed things up, but i have been told many places that swap hurts the life of your memory physically (by writing and rewriting constantly).
does it hurt your memory's life? and so is this a different kind of swap or something different?
    thanks

Flash memory has no hardware to wear out.

That doesn't mean it can't wear out. Look at the solid state drives of today, especially the MLC (Multi Layer Cell) ones. They have a fairly short lifespan resulting from constant read/writes.

Original ipods had a hard drive, but anything you would buy today should be utilizing flash memory unless you are shopping on ebay or something like that.

Does it wear your Flash Memory? Yes, yes it does. But, it's not as severe of wear as would be found on magnetic hard drives.

Considering the average life of a cell phone is 2 years, I doubt it will do anything harmful within that time.

At least with the Droid you have the option of replacing the SD card, whereas an ipod would either need to be sent in to be repaired or be replaced.

Well a) on the ipod forum they are talking about flash (iphone 3gs and itouch 3g)
And b) does that rom put it on the sdcard? In that case I don't care, but I figured it was into the actual phone's flash. (And the standard sdcards aren't fast enough?)

Yes it puts the swap on the sdcard, so it can add virtual memory to the device.

I thought the sdcard was too slow in order to be effective as swap? And why would they make it such a weird number?
