No need to dig deeper. I changed it so now we have visible mobile indicators and the custom statuses are readable.

Thanks Pyro for pointing me in the right directions.

It was just 3 .pngs to change:

    droid_watermark.png
    im_contact_icon_android_light.png
    im_contact_icon_mobile_light.png

    Install through recovery

    Enjoy

I just extracted the .png's and added them with NinjaMorph - I had already changed the "Smilies" from the Android Green ones to some Blue ones from AdamZ's Smoked Glass Framework -

    - everything is in place now :)

First, thanks for sharing this. Second, i was wondering if I just change the name of the file to from BlackTalk.zip to Talk.apk, move it to system/app and then change the permissions? I've tried this a couple of times but i cant get it to work. I was able to do it the other day with the older files that were posted but i cant anymore with the latest one. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

If you want to do it that way you need to extract the Talk.apk from the Blacktalk.zip first

Why is this apk over twice the size of the original? Are the modified png's not being saved in the smallest size possible?

I've lost my icon for GTalk?
I can't access the software at all.
If someone messages me & I see the notification in the bar & click it, I get nothing?
    Any ideas?

are you sure you flashed it properly? Did you use clockwork or sprecovery? And if you used sp, did you remember to rename the file "update.zip"?

I used CW, I "think" I flashed it properly...
I'm still new to all this, but I think I did it right...

Well I've never used cw, so I can't be of use there. But here is a workaround you could do. Download the file again, extract the contents, and get to the Talk.apk file. Then get the file on your sd card.

From there, either use adb push or use a file manager like root explorer, and move the Talk.apk file to the system/app folder. Then just set permissions as rw-r--r--, reboot. That should get you back up and running
