One of the things I've never been able to understand is why some people choose their nicknames. I've seen threads where people discuss this but some of the names I see make you dislike the person before they even say anything.

If your name is "Puppy Killer" (I doubt it's allowed) you're probably not exactly setting up a good impression. "Ih8evry1" wouldn't go over big either.

I usually will look to see the new people coming in and as much as I want to welcome everyone sometimes those type of names just keep me from doing it.

These are my own thoughts, and of course you're free to pick whatever name you'd like. I like the way this forum has taken shape, it's got great mods, and great people in it who like to be helpful. But just like anywhere else you go in life making a good first impression is helpful.

That's pretty much it. Rant over.

People like that do it just for the attention, although possible I doubt those people actually do it, that's whats so appealing about the internet, you can easily be someone else.

    I hear you though.

I find the word "hook" in your name to be quite scary and ominous.

Exactly. That's why I'm nice on the internet and a jerk in real life. :rofl3: j/k

Attention getting, yes indeed, that they are. But I don't know really I think I'm the same on the internet as I am in real life. I can be direct, even tough but at the same time I try to be understanding. You know some people ask some really dumb questions and I don't become insulting to them (at least not intentionally). That's pretty much how I am in real life.

hookbill is a general breed of parrots, probably the most common kind and you're right that hook in those bills (actually they are beaks) can be scary and ominous.:)

I'm glad you can admit it. Haha! [Totally messing with you. To be honest though, I rarely even look at the name. I'm more interested in the question someone has or the advice they can give, but I do agree there are some really disturbing names out there...]

I too rarely look at people's names. My username MontyMo is my first name and the first 2 letters of my last name. I would like it just to be Monty, but once or twice when registering Monty has been taken, so I chose MontyMo. I now use MontyMo on most sites to be consistent.

Jonny Kansas is a nickname bestowed upon me by friends when I moved to Michigan, because I like Johnny Cash and my name is Jon and I'm from Kansas. Haha! I also use it on Xbox Live and a few other places...

I do look at the names, because I want to know the people in the forum. It's what makes up the community. Specially those that post regularly, one's that seem knowledgeable. Now your name doesn't jump out at me because it's just a regular name, but I'll probably remember you because of this conversation. It's just how my brain works. And I won't think about you in a negative way.

It's not a question of being important. It's got to do with contributions to the community. I'll remember you just because you're from Kentucky and I used to live there. Still wish I did.

I think I've contributed to this community a good little bit, considering I just joined it the 4th of this month (January) and I've got almost 300 posts already...I ain't saying I should be awarded a medal or nothing lol but I try to help as many people as I possibly can on here, just for the simple aspect that we all have in common: THE DROID. I believe everyone should get the most they can outta this wonderful device and if I can help, I always try...I enjoy helping them actually. I get an email of someones post and I rush to bump if I know the answer to their question. I'm proud to be part of droid forums cause its benefitted me a GREAT DEAL and I try give back if I can ya know

It does color your perceptions a bit if your name is something like "Juicy" or something of that nature. So yeah, I get where you're coming from. I like my name and I don't think it comes off as anything remotely negative.

Mine is pretty much what everyone calls me in real life.

There was this incident with a camel in front of someone important.
Yes, it was embarrassing... He called me the name...

The name stuck way too easily.

that's why i put a lot of thought into what my internet handle would be on this forum. it WAS actually iKillPuppies, but decided to switch to this since it is only moderately offensive. ;)

in all seriousness, as a former psych major, i definitely agree.
