Oh k... Im new to phone terms and rooting but I bought my Charge because I wanted the Openness of Android... Im definitely into computers and I used to think I knew more than the average person about stuff like this but it is literally a different language and over my head or I don't know as much as I thought I did, so first things first: I'm a noob...

I want to root my phone mainly because of he performance enhancements and ability to rid my phone of all the Verizon garbage in my app drawer.

First, I plan to either continue using the interface I've created and have been using so I don't plan to do to much with either building my own ROM or downloading any unless i find one I like with the things included that i value...

Second, I want or need insight on the procedure to bring my phone back to "factory"... Essentially, I want to make a "boot image" of everything I've done to my phone as it is right now (unrooted) so that if I have to bring my phone into verzon for any reason I can resort to this so they won't be able to tell at face value... Im talking all the software garbage and everything to be included in this backup... Obviously my attempt is to still get Verizon to uphold anything with my phone that should anything happen to it...

Could someone either provide me the information or perhaps a different post or website that would help my that has things in lamens terms... Im attempting to learn but im failing : (

Thanks in advance for any contributions

this is for the moto droid1 but the guide is still a great help for understanding the basics...do not use this to root the charge but just get familiar with some of it...i owned the charge returned it and went back to my D1 still the best phone out there imo..the d3 looks ok but with all the blur and no4g and 512ram until someone unlocks it ima hold off...good luck have fun

best advice i can say is read some guides on here or xda and then just take the plunge for the charge its easy to find the odins(boot images) and the software needed to flash them to the phone

    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/rescue-squad-guides/70875-what-you-need-know-about-rooting.html

for the charge i dont know if im not supposed to post this here but sorry if im not feel free to edit this mod if need be...
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107797

im not responsible for what happens to your phone but this is a good thing to get into if you like computers and the openness of droid over iphone

Thanks a bunch... I caught on that an odin was essentially some type of ROM but had no idea that it was the same or similar to a boot image if that makes sense... I just need something that either I can create a custom restore image of what i have right now or at least a 100% out of the box factory restore with all bloatware included that comes stock... Thank you though for the information ill start there

Anything else would be greatly appreciated from everyone - thanks again!

I've seen posts that VZW does not care if phones are rooted and you have to bring them in, there's only 3 things they check for.

I think the 3 things are:
1.) The original box it came in with it's accessories
2.) The phone is in decent physical condition
    3.) The phone turns on

    If my memory is correct

VZW cares if you return a rooted device!

I wouldn't do it! return to stock before sending anything back! remove root.

Apparently that was debunked. But yeah, it's still a good idea to unroot first.

debunked? I don't remember hearing anything about that. As far as I know, and in talking to anyone who works with/for VZW... they will penalize you if they find the device is rooted.

either way it's not worth the risk IMO, just unroot before hand :)

odin is not a rom, its flashing software, how to use odin is here
    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-charge-hacks/157657-flashing-odin.html

all the files and instructions to return to stock are here
    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-charge-hacks/157625-return-stock.html

the xda link previously posted is a gud place to find mods, its not about finding what you want. its more about getting rid of the bloat and adding what you like imo.
i would suggest you get a cwm kernel, as alot of mods are installed through that after you flash a cwm kernel.
read the devs instructions as to how its installed.

special note, if you are not sure, ask questions first.
there arent too many mistakes that will brick your phone, but it can be done.

Clock Work Mod, sometimes its referred to as CWR(recovery)
its like stock recovery only much better. it has no effect on performance its just a pre boot tool that makes it easier to install mods and other things to be brief.

I officially rooted my phone using every ones advise... there is really good youtube video on how to do it... Right now I am running Gummy Charge 1.8 I believe... so far I'm very pleased...

I'm interested in what kind of apps everyone is using for their rooted phones!? This is probably not the right place for this topic so I'll be trying to find it and post there...

Thanks everyone for helping me out and educating me. It was appreciated very much.
