I'm a phone idiot. I just got my incredible, and i discovered this "wonderful" thing known as rooting. All i wanna know is what is it, what are the pros and cons, what's different, if tethering would work with my xbox (that'd make getting on live at school so much easier!), and how to restore the phone to factory settings (you know, just in case i have to take the phone in to verizon, seeing as every phone i've owned before has been taken in for some sort of maintenance or replacement)

Simple answers would be appreciated, pretend you're explaining this to a n00b. cause you are.

Android is based on Linux therefor rooting give you SU (Super User)access witch is sort of like Administrator on a windows PC. With SU access you can remove stock apps such as footprints. You can have free tethering (i think someone clarify?) and if you can i remember reading its only Ad-Hoc and I dont think an xbox supports Ad-Hoc. Rooting will destroy your warranty and you can brick your phone.

Thats your simple answer.

Pros of rooting

1. Full system access - Do everything?

Cons of rooting

1. Voids warranty (if you get caught)
2. iPhone users will hate you (more of a pro I guess lol)

Well your Close....

Buddy I just got my phone 3 weeks ago and I was just like you knew nothing... about three days i finally rooted my Dinc! And i can't put it down!! There are a TON of Pros!!

:icon_ banana:FULL System Access!!! :icon_ banana:
Some really good Custom ROMS (and a bunch to come!)
You can "Overclock" so speed-up processing speeds
Change Battery Usage (LowV)
Custome Themes.... well the list goes on!!!

Cons a few sure there is no more warranty an you could "Brick" your phone making it a $530 paperweight!! But it's so worth it if you truly want to sent your Android "FREE". Just read up on it a ton like I did!!! If you have any questions I'll anwser the best I can!!

Well to be technical we don't really have full system access except in recovery. We cannot write to the /system with the phone booted. Some day we may be able to but as of now it is still kind of a half root.
