I decided on Monday that the Red Incredible 2 and half-priced data plans were good enough reasons to upgrade (my bill went up by $1.50 a month). The shipments are backed up, but according to Verizon, mine should be here on Monday or Tuesday. *does dance*

I've never had a smartphone before, and I surely don't want to screw this one up. I've invested in an otterbox to keep the device safe from me, but what apps should I invest in to keep it safe from viruses/kids/everyone else?

Also, is rooting really worth it and why?

You don't keep apps to keep it safe.
Download "Hide It Pro" to hide your porn. Lol
Rooting is cool and fun but it can be frustrating, too.
For someone new to Smartphones I would recommend not rooting for at least 6 months.
Use the phone stock. It's quite good that way.
Get familiar with it. You will like it stock.

I got the free red one too! I was on D1 forever, rooted, overclocked, running a gingerbread ROM, yada...
Anyway, this incredible lives up to its name! Stock was nice, kept it that way for three whole hours :D
Rooting was a bit tricky, but no more difficult really than SBF'ing my D1 was the first time. There are some good tools out there, and a number of great How-To's on the various forums. I would root immediately to rid yourself of the VZW bloat and spyware :/
Downgrading to 2.3.3 to get root was really the hardest part, what because I didn't follow directions exactly enough.
I really prefer the Sense UI over AOSP... it feels much smoother and richer to me.
I mistakenly lost the Teeter game when I flashed TSM GingerBang Sense; anybody running stock rooted able to extract and send that to me? I'll PM you my email and owe you a drink...
