Traditional soda-lime glass is resistant to impact and scratches, but only slightly. Gorilla Glass is like tempered glass in that it is very strong from the face but very weak on the edges. If you drop the phone on the screen, it will probably be OK but if you drop it on the bottom front corner on concrete that metal will flex enough to shatter it all the way up. Also small fine grit and dust may contain particles that when flat against the screen like face down on a table can scratch the screen.
