Improving Voice to text performance

What is the difference or advantage of installing "voice data" over the default settings? I'm looking to improve essentially the recognization of certain words. Also what is the best way to spell acronyms or last names with the proper capitalization? Are there third party apps that can improve this functionality?

I'd take a look at Vlingo, free in the Market. I use it by default whenever possible and generally like it better than the built in. Plus it will listen thru your BT headset.
