I'm a little scared, but I've been a computer nerd since around 1986 and can generally hold my own with technology.

I'm doing the DroidMod thingie that does the work for you. Here goes nuthin'!

Wise choice. Just one suggestion. Pay attention to what it is doing while you are stepping it through. It can teach you a lot about rooting, and about all the different terminologies that people use here.

Enjoy, let us know how it turns out. :)

I finally took the leap this week after resisting the urge for many months.

I have no regrets. My phone now works and looks better.

I used DroidMod to obtain root, then I flashed to Bugless Beast, then flashed Chevy's OC kernel, then finally to get rid of the lame stock drawer, I added the smoked glass theme.

I love the new look and feel

Oh noes, Charlay! DroidMod never seemed capable for me. It's great for getting root (pretty damn easy with it), but once you do, get that sucker off your Droid and put Bugless Beast ESE53 0.8 Stable, then flash and update.zip a 1.25Mhz Chevy kernel. You will never. ever. need. another. phone. Oh, and if you need help, do PM me! I can help you with almost ANYTHING.

What does Bugless Beast have that I need? Also, would I have to go set up all my folders and icons and widgets again?

Wireless Tether doesn't hurt ^_^ Other than that, ROMs are ROMs. BB removes the black smoked glass look but you can put it on BB very easily if you wish, and BB is (in my opinion) much faster. It also has a NATIVE multi-touch browser (no change in font when you pinch to zoom), NATIVE multi-touch gallery, 2.1 Music player, all those little extras that make the Droid rule ^_^ I wholeheartedly recommend BB over DroidMod.

With the instructions for the various roms you can just not wipe data and cache and then you have all your apps. My first flash I wiped everything then just redownloaded the apps I needed again. The second time I did as in my signature (you can skip rooting and sprecovery because you have it now) and 10 minutes later I had changed roms with all my data intact.

I did have to set up my folders again.

However....as of the other day I'm using Ultimatefaves which replaces the folders I had (maps, tools, music, systools), with a new way of getting to them so I think a new rom would leave that data alone.

I don't really think I'd use wifi tether, since if I tether, I'd want the phone plugged in and charging. I really don't want to have to go in and reset all my icons in Better Cut and re-add all my direct dials/msgs to my folders, etc etc... bleah.

I like the XScope browser, and the gallery with DroidMod is good enough for me. One thing I really DON'T want to have to do is constantly update things... so I'm hoping this works and stays working.

if you want to change the look of your phone without going to another rom you can just use metamorph and apply a theme that fits your needs.
