You will retain everything. You lose that kind of stuff when you flash a new rom but that's what titanium backup is for.

    Its so fun and Addictive.
Contacts are synced with your google account so are paid apps, you just have to redownload them.

I dont have an X just yet so i have no idea. I can suggest a Rom to flash on after you root. Try ChevyNo1's SS X v1.0 It just came out today. I have been using Chevys SS rom on my droid since i rooted in early july and they work great.

I got a little ahead of my self. You seem a little Green when it comes to this but that's OK.
    1. A Rom is a modified Operating system, that system being Android.
    2. Flashing refers to applying that modified rom to your system.
But lets start here: Read and reread these posts to know and understand what you will be doing.
Go to this site and read how to root phones:
    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/re...08-multiple-phones-root-them-unroot-them.html

You do underrstand what root means? if not read this thread as well:
    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/632-what-root-means-stop-asking.html

Sorry i cant stay on to guide you but I amgoing to be getting off in a few as i have to go to work. Don't worry someone is always here to help. If you get stuck go to Rescue Squad Help - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum For help.
    Best of luck:)

Ya I did it using the same method. Make sure you go over the steps a few times.

I do not know of any video tutorials but as long as you follow all of the steps closely you will not damage your phone. I was just as worried as you when I first rooted but that was before I understood the basic concept. You're not really doing anything crazy. So what I did was read through the steps very carefully several times. Then I pulled out a notebook and wrote "how to root" at the top of the page.

Then I wrote all of the steps down. This helped me to further familiarize myself with the steps. Then I compared my notes the the steps in the thread to make sure they were all correct.

You don't really have to get that crazy about it but if it helps you I would say go for it. And just a tip, when you are entering commands in the terminal emulator, all spaces are important and all letters are case sensitive.
