I use Gtalk. Go to the Market and search IM. Read the reviews then download one or two and test drive for a few days. If your not pleased then download another app.

Personally (after trying all of them I think), I'd suggest either Trillian, Meebo or eBuddy. If you want just IM, Fring's kinda not so great since its emphasis is more on VOIP/SIP with IM as a sideline. I'm using Trillian currently and my only complaint is the lack of an icon in the notification tray, but I love how I'll get emails when I'm away long enough.

Edit: I do only use the old 4 services (ICQ/MSN/AIM/Yahoo), though. And newest version of Trillian has the notification icon now.
