I have finally solved my problem after much trial and error, Maps finally works! Heres how I did it.

Deleted every instance of maps still on my SD Card. This includes deleting from etc/permission/com.google.android.maps as well as from system/framework and from the system folder. I then went back into Manage apps and deleted whatever was left of the google maps and voila it finally works. It should also be noted that I did do a virgin oem restore before doing this.

I seemed to be having the same issue and then I did the following as suggested in the alldroid thread...
deleted the maps.apk from the /system/apps folder
    rebooted
menukey -> Settings-> Applications -> Managed Applications and found an entry for com.android.google.apps.maps (showing 0.00kb)
    Uninstalled it

Then I was able to install maps from the market with no issue.

Okay, I have an irritating issue. In setting up this phone I somehow got an email address embedded in google maps that isnt valid. Now every time I enter google maps it tells me the login failed. It lets me re-enter the password but I cannot find where to change the email address to a valid one. I do not own the one it is asking me to enter the password to. Any suggestions ? Its probably something simple isnt it...

    Thanks in advance !

Hmmmm .. I thought Maps used whatever email you signed onto the phone in the first place (first google email). Have you tried going into Settings, applications, and then resetting everything for Maps?

I updated to 4.2 and now google maps cannot find my location. Anyone else having this problem? I uninstalled the update and it still says it cannot find my location. Everything was fine before I updated.

I just updated today and was actually just using it with no issues. TRy clearing all your cache data followed by a reboot and then test it again.

Man I'm having the same login failed error message. Did anyone find a solution? It happened after that. Update for me. Currently rooted and using BB v1.0 ROM.

I wish this was easier and we could just do update.zip or something

This is easy though.. I mean, easy compared to 90% of the stuff we do to get stable rooted Droids.
