I need a step by step to rooting my phone.

I've decided that I need to root my phone. The bloatware they install on these things is really dragging it down and I want to get rid of it. My phone is a Razr MAXX on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Does the process of rooting wipe my phone clean? If so, what is the best backup program to use? Where can I download the rooting software? Just a quick step by step is all I need. Please and thanks.

I don't know whether this is definitely the exploit you did or not (though "blade" leads me to believe it's so), but this works for Jelly Bean, both the 98.72.8 (December 24, 2012 leak), and 98.72.16 (the new newly released OTA version, the most current Jelly Bean). You MUST follow the screen prompts and continue through the entire process. Also, even if you have already activated "Battery saver" on Smart Actions, you will still need to go through the motions as instructed.

Here is a link to the Root Exploit Release and Discussion thread.

Here's the link to the actual root files:
Windows: http://vulnfactory.o.../razr_blade.zip
Linux: http://batakang.com/...blade_linux.zip
Mac: http://batakang.com/...r_blade_mac.zip

Instructions:

Windows-
-Download the zip file and extract.
-Connect device via USB (Make sure you have the current Moto drivers FIRST!)
-Make sure USB Debug is on
-Make sure you have Smart Actions fully installed, unfrozen and unmodified
-Make sure the phone IS NOT in mass storage mode
-Double click run.bat
-Follow the screen prompts
-Don't quit until instructed to do so

Linux/Mac-
-Extract .zip
-Open terminal and cd into the folder
-Run:
chmod +x razr_blade.sh
bash razr_blade
.sh

"Make sure the phone IS NOT in mass storage mode"

I can not uncheck Mass Storage; I have to check either Media device or Camera to deselect Mass Storage, correct? First time to root phone and I don't want to mess it up.

Correct. I use the Media Device selection and it works like a charm.
