The #whatever is a hashtag. It's just a way to add a category to whatever message you're posting.
So someone could post a status message or tweet that says "dallas cowboys suck #nfl" and if someone searches for NFL it'll catch the hash tag and add it to the results.

ok, the hash tag makes sense. And I figured out the Boomstick reference finally. I'm in Dallas, and a lifelong Cowboys fan. The boomstick in question turns out to be what Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers calls his bat. So every time he hits a home run a lot of my friends start with the #boomstick posts.
