I want to have one of these cool themes i see everyone with! I have not upgraded anything i am running the current official version of android OS.... Do i need to run other things before i can change my theme??? I am just so lost on how to change my theme... I am not aware of the terminology that is used on this forum and i think that is where i get lost... I appreciate the help so much!

Most of these themes will require you to root your phone first. To do this you can start here: How-To Root your stock 2.1 Droid

or go to the Hacks section and read a few of the sticky posts there to get started. But make sure to read the warnings first and understand what you are doing first.

VolDroid is right, you need to root before you can even think about installing roms or themes. If the lead he gave you doesn't solve your problem, get back to us. It's a fairly easy procedure, as long as you're careful, and opens a WORLD of opportunities for doing things with your Droid.

That looks like a PITA to just install a theme. Do you have to 'root' the phone to change the background too?

No, if by "background", you mean wallpaper - that doesn't require rooting.

If you do not want to root your phone and void your warrenty you can install alternative launchers, which include the number of desktop screens you can slide back and forth and store your icons on, the type of icon app drawer launcher, etc.

You can change your wallpaper.(long-press the desktop or use the menukey to get to wallpapers)

You can pick up better icons or similar apps in the market and use totally different icons than the stock ones.

Sweeter Home is one of the more in depth home launchers on the market. You can really spend some time with that tweaking the look of your phone.

All of the above you can do without rooting your phone.

The rooted themes take things a step further and change things like the color of the phone numbers, the color of the pull down notification bar, and other stock items. Widgets like Pandora can be made clear, colored, etc.

Question for the Moderator: I personally learned to root my Droid by way of a series of videos over on Droid Life. If they're still available, they'd probably be very useful to people thinking about rooting. Is it permissible/copacetic to post those urls (if I can find them again) here?

I used the video's also but didn't have them bookmarked anymore and didn't take the time to find them. I'd use the videos if I was going to root mine now.

Hey Chris - I wasn't sure what your name was (didn't catch the Chris in your signature at first) or if there was more than one Moderator for this section of the forum. So I just used the kind of generic "Moderator". :)

You know, in looking at those excellent "How To" videos, I'm thinking that they weren't the ones I saw back in January, when I rooted my Droid. I'm thinking that maybe the ones I saw were on that forum that closed down, so bookmarking them wouldn't really have helped us now.

What was the name of that android forum that closed? I can't remember, off the top of my head...:)
